The National Park Service (NPS), in coordination with the City of Albuquerque (City), is moving ahead with plans to formalize a sustainable trail system and manage public use on trails within Petroglyph National Monument. The NPS Acting Intermountain Regional Director approved the Visitor Use Management Plan/Environmental Assessment (VUM Plan/EA) with the signing of the finding of no significant impact (FONSI) on March 12, 2019. The public was provided an opportunity to review and comment on the VUM Plan/EA in fall 2018. The FONSI and the VUM Plan/EA can be viewed by clicking the "Document List" link on the left side of this web page.

Dennis A. Vásquez, NPS Superintendent of Petroglyph National Monument, shared, "We are excited to move forward with this plan. The collaboration with our city partners and the significant input from tribal representatives and the general public helped to formulate the plan. The decisions that were reached will better protect the monument resources and provide for a higher quality visitor experience."

The selected action (alternative 2/preferred alternative in the VUM Plan/EA) includes formalizing a 39-mile sustainable trail system, reducing access points, restoring unauthorized visitor-created trails and former roads, and implementing a monitoring strategy. The selected action will enhance the protection of the monument's natural and cultural resources by establishing a formalized trail system that links local residents and visitors to areas of interest within the monument and provides additional opportunities to learn about and understand important monument resources and stories. The selected action focuses visitor use on walking and hiking, with limited multiuse opportunities (bicycling and hiking together) within the monument to provide for connectivity with existing city trails. The selected action promotes resource conservation and tribal access and traditional uses. Implementation will occur in phases as funding becomes available.
