Canyon Lodging Redevelopment Project

Yellowstone National Park is currently implementing the Canyon Redevelopment Plan, a multi-phase redevelopment at the Canyon developed area which is designed to replace substandard multiplex cabin housing with cost and energy efficient lodge style visitor accommodations. The plan, first envisioned in 1988, is also part of a larger concessions prospectus for lodging and dining park-wide. The redevelopment plan will provide a better visitor experience in lodging accommodations that meet current accessibility and safety requirements. This plan is an undertaking per 36CFR800 and Yellowstone has consulted with the Wyoming SHPO regarding the eligibility of and affect to the Canyon developed area. The plan calls for demolition of 55 Mission 66 era cabins – referred to as Loop A and Loop C. The park initially determined that the cabins were not eligible for the National Register but after additional consultation with the Wyoming SHPO, the cabins were determined eligible for the National Register. Demolition of the cabins will therefore constitute an adverse affect per 36CFR800.
