Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) Recordation of the Ohio and Erie Canal Pinery Dam and Brecksville Diversion Dam

The NPS, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) and the Friends of the Crooked River completed the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) Recordation of the Ohio and Erie Canal Pinery and Brecksville Diversion Dams, Head Gates and Feeder Canal (HAER OH-59-G, H, I and J). This mitigation product came out of the development of the Brecksville Diversion Dam removal project and was paid for by the Friends of the Crooked River and Ohio EPA. These documents were completed to fulfill a mitigation commitment outlined in the 2017 MOA that resolved the adverse effects caused by the dam removal on the Ohio and Erie Canal Historic District and Cultural Landscape, Stipulations 1A.1 and 2: The NPS and Ohio EPA will document the Canal Diversion Dam to HAER Level II standards to mitigate the direct adverse effects to the resource and document the remnants of the Pinery Dam to HAER Level II standards to mitigate the direct adverse effects to the resource.

This documentation was funded by Ohio EPA and administered by Friends of the Crooked River for the National Park Service. Scott D. Heberling, MA, project historian and historical archeologist, was responsible for background research, field survey, and report preparation.
