Rehabilitate Clara Barton NHS - Environmental Assessment

The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking public comments for its proposal to repair and rehabilitate the 130-year-old Clara Barton structure within the Clara Barton National Historic Site (NHS), administratively managed by the George Washington Memorial Parkway. This special site, a National Historic Landmark in Glen Echo, Maryland, was home to Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross. From 1891 to 1912, it served as her residence, a warehouse for emergency supplies, and the first national headquarters of the American Red Cross.

The National Park Service has prepared this environmental assessment (EA) to evaluate the impacts of rehabilitation options for the Clara Barton NHS. The proposed rehabilitation project will resolve ongoing issues of life safety, accessibility, and indoor environmental controls and building systems that the Clara Barton NHS requires to better serve NPS staff and the general public. The project includes essential repairs and updates to meet modern health and safety standards, while honoring the historic character of the building.

This EA presents two alternatives for the historic site, the action alternative and the no action alternative, and analyzes the environmental consequences of implementing each alternative. You are invited to provide comments on these alternatives and assessments. EA. Your comments will be accepted from July 14 through August 13, 2025.
