Environmental Assessment and Wetland / Floodplain Statement of Findings Long Point Cabin Camp

The National Park Service (NPS) has prepared this environmental assessment (EA) to evaluate the impacts of replacing and relocating the Long Point Cabin Camp, which provides visitors with a cabin camping experience on North Core Banks of Cape Lookout National Seashore (Seashore).

This EA presents three alternatives for management of the camp on North Core Banks of the Seashore in Carteret County, North Carolina; describes the environment that would be impacted by the alternatives; and analyzes the environmental consequences of implementing the alternatives. Under alternative A (no action), the camp at Long Point (existing site) would remain closed to visitors, would remain in place, and would not be maintained, and a new camp would not be constructed. Under alternative B (remove existing camp), the camp at the existing site would be removed, but a new camp would not be constructed. Under alternative C (northern location), which has been identified as the preferred alternative, the camp at the existing site would be removed and a new camp would be constructed at a location approximately 5 miles north of the existing site and the vehicle ferry dock.

This EA has been prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, as amended and the implementing regulations of the 2020 Council on Environmental Quality (40 Code of Federal Regulations 1500-1508.9), to provide the decision-making framework that 1) analyzes a reasonable range of alternatives to meet objectives of the proposal, 2) evaluates potential issues and impacts on the park's resources and values, and 3) identifies mitigation measures to lessen the degree or extent of these impacts.

We invite you to comment on this EA during the 30-day public review period*. (*Note: The comment period for the EA was extended one week due to issues with PEPC. The park would like to ensure that anyone that tried to access the EA during 'down' periods has been given ample time to access the document and provide comment.) The preferred method of providing comments is through the NPS's Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website for the park at: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/CALO.
