Emergency repair to Shutt House (HS-17) back porch due to rot and decay caused by leaking roof

Lincoln Home National Historic Site » Emergency repair to Shutt House (HS-17) back porch due to rot and decay caused by leaking roof » Document List

The small back porch which covers the employee entrance to the Shutt House (HS-17) housing Senator Richard Durbin's Springfield office, has extensive rot and decay in the rafters and posts, caused by the galvanized tin flat roof continued leaking. For safety, a 6"x6" post is holding up the northwest corner where the post had completely rotted, and 2x4s and 2x10s are covering what is left of the rafter tails to slow more water from seeping in. The roof will be removed and replaced with a copper roof and guttering. The rotten interior rafters will be removed and any salvageable wood will be sistered on to new rafters. The posts will be remade as needed, especially in the NW corner. The batten board ceiling will be checked for rotting and replaced where necessary. When repairs are complete, the entire structure will be painted to match the rest of the house.
