Cape Lookout National Seashore » Harkers Island Ferry Departure Gateway - Facilities » Document List

Cape Lookout National Seashore (the park) is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) for Passenger Ferry Facilities at the Harkers Island Visitor Center. This project continues the park's plans to establish passenger ferry service from Harkers Island to Shackleford Banks and the Cape Lookout Lighthouse on South Core Banks, as called for in the park's 2008 Commercial Services Plan. In August 2011, the National Park Service also selected a site in the Town of Beaufort for the second passenger ferry departure site.

Although existing Harkers Island Visitor Center facilities will be utilized for the ferry service, the EA will evaluate proposed facility improvements and amenities that would prepare the site for use by a contracted ferry concessioner and ferry passengers.

A public scoping meeting was held on Thursday, September 20, 2012, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center, located at 1785 Island Road, Harkers Island, North Carolina. Information was provided regarding the current status of this effort.

The Harkers Island Passenger Ferry Departure Site (Facilities) EA will be available for public comment from February 25, 2013 until March 27, 2013.
