The foundation, walls, and roof of the 1912 Pump Station No. 2 (part of the San Francisco Fire Department's Auxiliary Water Supply System) need substantial seismic strengthening in order for the facility to remain functioning in the event of a major earthquake. The rear portion of the steam boilers, which were abandoned in place when the pumps were converted to diesel fuel, will be removed, allowing the space to be used for ADA-accessible crew quarters and allowing access to the west wall for structural reinforcing. The existing steam boiler façades will be structurally reinforced and preserved in place. All the functioning mechanical equipment including the pumps, diesel drives, valves, and piping, will be removed and replaced with modern equipment.
