The NPS completed the environmental impact analysis for Alcatraz Island Historic Preservation and Safety Construction Program in 2002. The purpose of the proposed project is to protect the public health and safety of the more 1 million people who visit Alcatraz each year, preserve the National Historic Landmark District, and to implement the needed repairs in a manner that minimizes impacts to biological resources. The project is being completed in phases.

Phase One includes:

• Cellhouse Stabilization and Seismic Upgrade (completed)
• Sallyport Structural Repair and Seismic Upgrade
