Construct Bicycle Trail to Rainy Lake Visitor Center

Voyageurs National Park is proposing to construct a paved bike route connecting the existing bike path on Highway 11 with the Rainy Lake Visitor Center.

The bike route is needed to provide bicyclists, pedestrians and automobile drivers with safe access to the visitor center while protecting park resources and providing an enjoyable recreational experience.

There is currently no bike path along the park road, and people driving automobiles and riding bicycles are often sharing the road.

The road is narrow in several locations and there are turns that make it difficult for motorists to see cyclists until they are very close.

The park is considering two alternate routes to connect the existing bike path on Highway 11 with the Rainy Lake Visitor Center. The two alternate routes being considered are:

1) paved bike lanes on both sides of the existing park road

2) the construction of a separate bike path on the north side of the road.

The proposed bike route would pass through wetland areas and forest, and would necessitate the modification of the adjacent landscape. This includes removal of vegetation, alteration of wetlands, blasting of rock outcrops, and the introduction of fill materials.

The park has prepared an environmental assessment to evaluate the potential impacts related to construction of the bike route, to identify alternatives that would eliminate or reduce environmental impacts, and to involve partner agencies and the public in the planning process.

Click on the "Documents" link at the left side of this page to view more information, to review the environmental assessment, and to submit commments or questions on-line.

The environmental assessment is available for public review and comment for a 30 day period beginning February 1, 2007.

Please contact the park if you are interested in learning more about this project, or if you have any questions or concerns.
