Headlands Institute Campus Improvement and Expansion Plan

Golden Gate National Recreation Area » Headlands Institute Campus Improvement and Expansion Plan » Document List

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) and the Headlands Institute (HI) have completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) that presents and evaluates alternatives to improve and expand the HI environmental education and conferencing campus, located on GGNRA lands in southern Marin County.

The HI campus currently occupies eight historic buildings and approximately seven acres in the Marin Headlands at Fort Cronkhite. The EA presents and analyzes three "action" alternatives, with Alternative D identified as the Agency Preferred alternative. The action alternatives propose varying configurations for a renovated campus which would provide a teaching model of sustainable living and state-of-the-art learning facilities. Proposed campus improvements include preservation and rehabilitation of historic resources; the provision of additional lab, classroom, dining and dorm spaces; restoration of a riparian corridor; increased teaching spaces connected to the surrounding environment; additional playing areas; improved campus circulation and parking; increased capacity for up to 350 students; and improved campus security and safety.

The EA will be available for public review and comment for 30 days. Comments must be submitted or postmarked on or before September 14, 2009. Comments may be submitted online, in writing at the public meeting, by e-mail to goga_planning@nps.gov, or by mail to: Superintendent, Fort Mason Building 201, San Francisco, CA 94123, Attn: HI Campus Improvement Project.

A public meeting is scheduled for August 19th from 4-7pm at the Bay Model in Sausalito, CA.
