Trail Management Plan

Crater Lake National Park » Trail Management Plan » Document List

The National Park Service is seeking public input on a Trail Management Plan at Crater Lake National Park. The purpose of the trail management plan is to provide high-quality nonmotorized recreational opportunities while preserving park resources. Specifically, the park proposes to construct new trails and change designated uses on some existing trails. The plan is intended to guide trail management and investment in trail infrastructure over the next 25 years.

The draft Trail Management Plan includes detailed maps and an environmental assessment illustrating a No-Action Alternative and two Action Alternatives. The No-Action Alternative reflects a continuation of current management practices, as established in the park's 2005 General Management Plan. The two Action Alternatives were informed by public and stakeholder feedback gathered earlier in the planning process and represent alternative approaches for addressing issues identified in the plan, while also meeting desired conditions for managing the park's roads and trails. The National Park Service has identified Alternative 1 as the preferred alternative for implementation.

An online "StoryMap" is available to provide an overview of the draft plan and the corresponding maps at:

Download and review the draft trail management plan/environmental assessment by clicking the Document List in the menu to the right. Then click on Open for Comment to submit your feedback. You can also mail comments to the address below and attend the virtual public meeting on October 13.

We will be accepting feedback between September 21, 2021 and October 21, 2021. We would like to hear your thoughts on the alternatives presented in the plan, the analysis of their impacts, and any other concerns or ideas you might have. Your comments will help us ensure we have the best plan possible.

Crater Lake National Park will be having a virtual public meeting regarding the trail management plan on Wednesday October 13, 2021 from 6:00pm PDT to 7:30pm PDT. A short, informational presentation will begin at 6:00pm PDT and will be followed by time for questions related to the Trail Management Plan and environmental assessment.
