Visitor Center Area Russian Thistle Removal

Arches National Park » Visitor Center Area Russian Thistle Removal » Document List

Areas near the park visitor center and on the septic system leach field are covered with a blanket of Russian thistle, after the burning of the area in April. Removal of the young seedlings at this time would save many hours of manual labor hoeing full-grown thistle, and would prevent the eyesore that would develop as the plants mature. A little effort at this time would eliminate the need for a huge effort in the future.

The removal could be by burning the green seedlings with a propane torch or by treatment with approved herbicide. The proposed action is burning, with the assistance of the Moab Interagency Fire Center, likely with an engine on-site. This work should be done in the next few weeks to be most effective. Service groups would be utilized this summer and fall to remove the large quantity of other exotic species in the area, but this would be a great start.
