This project would accomplish visitor and employee safety and protection from an increasing rodent infestation. Arches is located in southeast Utah near the Four Corners area, where incidence of Hantavirus in mice is common. The park's Housing Management Plan states that the Center for Disease Control has collected and tested mice from southeast Utah and determined that one in four tested positive for Hantavirus.
This project would rodent-proof Arches headquarters buildings. These buildings include the Inventory and Monitoring program building, two fee collection/Entrance Stations, historic Rock House administration building, Visitor Center, Maintenance shop, and the Search and Rescue building. It would involve replacing all exterior window screens, exterior door screens, door seals, repairing foundation cracks, replacing exterior wall and foundation vents, repairing soffit voids and holes, replacing soffit vents, and removing overgrown vegetation from around buildings. These efforts would reduce and/or eliminate incursions of mice, packrats and insects that are currently entering these buildings. No impacts to visitors are expected.
