In 2013, George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) obtained small municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4 permit) coverage in Virginia from the Department of Environmental Quality. As part of the small MS4 permit requirements, a facility must develop and implement a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Action Plan from MS4s located in urbanized areas. A TMDL Action Plan aims to reduce the amount of discharged stormwater from a facility, as well as to reduce the pollutants contained within the stormwater.

In accordance with the permit requirements, GWMP has developed TMDL Action Plans for the stormwater discharged from park property into the Chesapeake Bay, Potomac River, and other watersheds. The GWMP TMDL Action Plans specify best management practices (BMPs) that park staff will implement to reduce the discharge of nitrogen, phosphorous, and sediment loads. GWMP must meet increasingly more stringent pollutant load reductions over subsequent permit cycles of 5 years. George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) will make public its action plans on this page beginning September 1, 2017.
