Lincoln Home National Historic Site » Remove approximately 20-year old apple tree and grind out stump in Beedle backyard (Block 7, Lot 14). Replace tree. » Document List

A small apple tree of unknown variety, planted in approximately 1998, has been pruned incorrectly and is now dying due to rot, mold and ant infestations. Park maintenance staff will cut the tree to the ground and use a stump grinder to remove the stump to approximately 18" below surface. A new Heirloom variety apple tree will be planted about 4' north to avoid any cross-contamination with remaining bacteria or pest issues. The new tree will be approximately 3-4' tall.

The Beedle backyard is somewhat visible from the front door of the Lincoln Home and is part of the National Register contributing landscape. The heirloom variety will be chosen from a list of apple trees that were available in the mid-1800s in Illinois. The tree is listed as part of the park Cultural Landscape Plan (2014).
