General Management Plan

Gateway Arch National Park » General Management Plan » Document List

The National Park Service has completed a Final Environmental Impact Statement and General Management Plan (GMP) for Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri, that includes one of our nation's iconic structures, the Gateway Arch. The plan establishes a clear vision and will serve as a guide for the long term management of the site that memorializes the westward expansion of the United States.

Four alternatives were analyzed that looked at how the Memorial might look and might be managed in the future. Management zones have been developed and applied to each new alternative in different ways, and are an important part of the plan.

Based on public response and environmental analysis, Alternative 3 was selected as the preferred alternative for future management direction. Alternative 3 includes a major design competition for revitalizing the Memorial, improved connections between the Memorial and the surrounding communities, expanded programs and services and the possible expansion of the Memorial across the Mississippi River into East St. Louis, Illinois.
