The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing to improve and expand the existing trail system and offer more diverse trail experience opportunities in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Specifically, the park proposes to construct new trails and remove and/or reroute underutilized or unsustainable trails. The planning process is being conducted in compliance with NPS general regulations regarding bicycle use.
In 2017, the pubic was asked to provide their thoughts on a proposed action. The planning team used these public comments to inform development of preliminary plan alternatives. Then in 2018, the Carr Fire burned 39,000 of the park's 42,000 acres, resulting in park staff diverting funding and staff time typically dedicated to trail maintenance to clearing hazard trees and stabilizing soils to keep trails safe, open and passable. The trails management plan was reinitiated in 2020, and now reflects the changed landscape and addresses the immediate need for long term solutions to poorly designed and/or unsustainable trails.
Whiskeytown National Recreation Area will be having a virtual public meeting regarding the trails management plan on Wednesday June 23rd 2021 from 6:00pm PDT to 7:30pm PDT. This virtual public meeting can be accessed using the following link on June 23rd 2021: https://bit.ly/2SaWmIV
The trails management plan contains a No Action Alternative and an Action Alternative, which is the NPS Preferred Alternative. The park would like to ask for public input on the alternatives. Your feedback will be used to further refine the NPS preferred alternative.
As part of the public scoping process, the NPS is asking for your input on the proposed action. The comment period is open until July 8th 2021. To make a comment on the proposed action please select 'Open for Comment' in the left hand side of this webpage. You can also mail comments to the address below and attend the virtual public meeting on June 23rd.
