Concerning the Proposed National Desert Storm and Desert Shield Memorial
To be held on:
Tuesday, November 12, 2019
2000 K St NW, Suite 800
Washington, DC 20002
Conference Call: (877) 286-5733, Conference ID: 860 575 561#
The National Desert Storm War Memorial Association (Association), in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), proposes to establish a permanent memorial to commemorate and honor those who, as a member of the Armed Forces, served on active duty in support of Operation Desert Storm or Operation Desert Shield. The memorial is anticipated to be known as the National Desert Storm and Desert Shield Memorial. The memorial site is located at the southwest corner of the intersection of Constitution Avenue and 23rd Street NW in Washington, D.C., and is administered by National Mall and Memorial Parks unit of NPS.
In accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act, the Association and the NPS are conducting Section 106 consultation to consider the effects of the memorial on historic properties. The Section 106 process is being undertaken concurrently with the environmental review process mandated by the National Environmental Policy Act. The public and consulting parties are invited to attend a meeting on November 12, 2019, at 2000 K St NW, 8th Floor, Washington, DC from 2:30 PM until 4:00 PM. The meeting will provide an opportunity to consider refinements to the memorial design and to hold a preliminary discussion on the potential effects of the memorial design on historic properties.
The consulting parties most recently met on November 13, 2018, at which time participants reviewed and offered comments on the memorial design.
The United States Congress authorized establishment of the memorial on federal land in the District of Columbia in Public Law 113-291. In Public Law 115-18, the United States Congress authorized the location of the memorial within Area I as defined under the Commemorative Works Act. The memorial must be consistent with the Commemorative Works Act, which ensures that commemorative works in areas administered by the NPS in the District of Columbia are appropriately designed, constructed, and located.
If you require additional information or special assistance to attend and participate in this meeting, please contact Catherine Dewey at the NPS at 202-245-4711.
