Sand Island Campsite and Day-Use Plan and EA
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has developed a plan/environmental assessment (EA) for Sand Island that will help implement a portion of the park's General Management Plan (GMP) and Accessibility Transition Plan.
Under the preferred alternative, the north and south docks at Sand Island East Bay will be replaced with an L shaped dock that minimizes impacts to coastal processes and maximizes docking space and protection. Visitor experience will be improved through providing accessible group and individual campsites and a nearly two mile accessible boardwalk from the East Bay dock to the light station. This will be the only accessible route to a historic light station within the park, providing a unique experience that is currently unavailable to many of our visitors. This alternative will also enhance visitor experience by improving the layout and location of campsites, trails and outhouses; the addition of a picnic area; and increased remote campsites.
