Merced Wild and Scenic River Comprehensive Management Plan Draft Outstandingly Remarkable Values

Outstandingly Remarkable Values (ORVs) are defined by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act as the unique characteristics that make a river worthy of special protection. The NPS began the process of determining the Merced's ORVs in winter, 2010. Recognizing that resource conditions and planning contexts may have changed since the Merced's Wild and Scenic designation, the agency began the ORV development process anew, using the ORVs developed for the Merced in its previous river plans (2000 and 2005) as important background material. The agency also referred to the draft ORVs that it had prepared in 2008 along with evaluation criteria that the U.S. Forest Service prepared for the Merced in 1986. Most importantly, the agency used the most current available resource and monitoring information
in determining the Merced's ORVs.

Accurately and adequately expressing a river's ORVs provides a foundation for planning, management, and monitoring activities within a Wild and Scenic River corridor. This report contains the draft ORVs for the portion of the Merced Wild & Scenic Rivers within Yosemite National Park.
