On June 12 and 13, 2022, the park experienced record-breaking flood events in several locations, primarily along the Yellowstone River, Gardner River, and tributaries located in Park County, Montana and Park County, Wyoming. Devastating flood impacts occurred in the park on multiple sections of the North Entrance Road between Gardiner and Mammoth Hot Springs—the only park entrance open year-round. During the summer and fall of 2022, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) improved the Old Gardiner Road to serve as the temporary North Entrance Road. This road has a 5-10 year design life.
The National Park Service in cooperation FHWA, Western Federal Lands Division, is proposing a permanent north entrance road in Yellowstone National Park.
Action is needed because the North Entrance Road failed after the catastrophic flooding event in June 2022. The North Entrance Road provides vehicular access between Gardiner, Montana and Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming for park staff, visitors, and Cooke City residents; provides critical access for emergency vehicles; and provides the second most popular entrance to the park and the only entrance open year-round.
NPS is starting the planning process and will be providing opportunities for the public to learn about the proposed project and provide comment.
