Concessions Housing Replacement and Associated Facilities

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve » Concessions Housing Replacement and Associated Facilities » Document List

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (Glacier Bay) is proposing to construct housing and maintenance facilities in support of concessions operations in Bartlett Cove. The proposed project area is in the same geographical area as existing facilities and includes constructing a new consolidated dormitory and a maintenance building with an adjacent fenced-in staging area. New structures would be placed to visually screen concessioner operations more effectively from visitor use areas. The project also includes the removal of three deteriorated housing units and two single-story outbuildings and modifications to utilities and parking areas in support of the newly constructed facilities. Proposed activities would be confined to approximately 2.5 acres, 1.5 of which is previously undisturbed.

This environmental assessment analyzes the no action and preferred action alternatives. Resource issues considered include vegetation and the Glacier Bay Lodge Complex Historic District. The proposed undertaking to replace concessions housing and associated facilities will not result in an adverse effect to the Glacier Bay Lodge Complex Historic District as concurred by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) concurrence letter (attached).

Construction is anticipated to commence in the summer of 2022 and conclude in 2024. Demolition and removal of deteriorating housing units would occur only after the new dormitory is complete to ensure successful continuation of concessions operations.

Public comment will be open from 11/22/2021 through 12/21/2021.
