Prior to NPS acquisition of the property, the land was primarily used for agricultural crops during the 20th Century. The Osotouy Unit is a nationally significant property associated with pre-historic and proto-historic American Indians and early European exploration of the Mississippi River Valley. The site contains the Menard-Hodges National Historic Landmark which is the largest known civic-ceremonial center of the Mississippian culture along the lower Arkansas River. Two nationally significant archeological sites also lie within the boundary of Osotouy.
