Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve proposes to implement the 2016 Fire Management Plan (FMP) that includes descriptions and management objectives related to wildfire, prescribed fire, and non-fire fuels reduction.

The FMP Environmental Assessment (EA) document analyzes alternatives for wildland fire management, including fuels management, and the potential impacts of the alternatives on the natural and cultural environments in and around the Preserve.

The purpose of this FMP and EA is to provide a long-range fire management plan and program that restores fire as a fundamental ecological process while protecting people, structures, and adjacent lands from fire. Prescribed fire would be used as a management tool to restore, mimic, or replace the ecological influences of natural fire, reduce hazardous fuels, control non-native and woody vegetation, and restore and enhance native prairie and wildlife habitat. The FMP serves as a detailed program of action by providing specific guidance and procedures for the use of fire to accomplish resource management goals and desired future conditions set forth in the Preserve's General Management Plan.
