Pike Ridge Access Resolution

In 1980, Katmai National Monument's western boundary was adjusted by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) to include Pike Ridge, a low terminal moraine near the outlet of Naknek Lake. ANILCA designated the Pike Ridge area as "National Park," while lands to the northeast were established as Katmai National Preserve. The Park designation eliminated subsistence activities and motorized vehicle uses from all Park lands, including the Pike Ridge area.
The Pike Ridge trail is an undesignated off-road vehicle (ORV) route that pre-dates the establishment of the Park and meanders in and out of the Park's boundary. (The Park boundary is not marked, therefore, it is not apparent when users are on Park lands versus State- or Native-owned lands.) While the Pike Ridge trail provides King Salmon and Naknek residents important access to subsistence resources and use areas outside the Park, motorized vehicle use and subsistence activities are not legally allowed within the Park boundary.
The Park needs to resolve long-standing access questions and use concerns on the Pike Ridge trail while upholding subsistence and access provisions of applicable law. An Environmental Assessment will be prepared later this summer, in which the comments received at these workshops will be considered.
