The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking public comment on a proposed ¾ mile trail that expands on the existing trail in the historic Canyon City town site located at mile 8 on the Chilkoot Trail, west of the Taiya River in KLGO. The proposed changes are designed to protect the natural and cultural resources of the historic Canyon City town site while accommodating visitors.
Canyon City has been a popular camping area since the trail's creation. It was the site of an organized settlement on the Chilkoot Trail route during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 99. The present Canyon City campground is located on the East side of the Taiya River.
