Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and Middle Delaware National Scenic River » Foundation Document » Document List

A Foundation Document has been prepared for the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. This document serves as the underlying guidance for all management and planning decisions for a national park unit and it is a requirement for all National Park Service units in the system. It describes the core mission of the park unit by identifying the purpose; significance; fundamental, important, and related resources and values; interpretive themes; assessment of planning and data needs; special mandates and administrative commitments; and the park's setting in its regional context. The foundation document can be useful in all aspects of park management to ensure that primary management objectives are accomplished before addressing other factors that are also important, but not directly essential to achieving the park purpose and maintaining its significance.

Because many of the original National Park Service planning documents for the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area are dated, preparing the Foundation Document was the first step for considering the park's future planning and study needs.
