Fort Pickens Ferry Support Facilities and Shuttle Service

Gulf Islands National Seashore » Fort Pickens Ferry Support Facilities and Shuttle Service » Document List

We are beginning an Environmental Assessment at the Fort Pickens Area within Gulf Islands National Seashore for the development of visitor facilities and shuttle service to support the proposed Pensacola Bay ferry passenger activities in the Fort Pickens area. We propose to repurpose historic buildings and existing structures and pavement for ferry support services and to implement a landside shuttle service to the beaches, campground and historic sites to complement the Fort Pickens ferry service. This project continues the park's plans to establish seasonal passenger ferry service between Fort Pickens, Pensacola, and Pensacola Beach.

The purpose of the project will be to provide landside improvements and shuttle service for ferry passengers during a visit to the Fort Pickens area. The project is needed due to a lack of suitable facilities for operational support and services for ferry passengers and limited access opportunities for ferry passengers.

The park is engaging the public and agencies in scoping activities to receive comments and inform the EA for Ferry Facilities and Shuttle Service at Fort Pickens. This information will be useful in developing the Fort Pickens Area plan and alternatives, while protecting natural and cultural resources. The planning process will follow requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act.

As we begin this process, we invite you to participate in the initial public scoping process to share your thoughts, ideas, and comments regarding this planning process.

Please stay engaged and take advantage of opportunities to share your thoughts and ideas. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Daniel R. Brown
