Little Sand Bay Visitor Center Replacement Project
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore » Little Sand Bay Visitor Center Replacement Project » Document List
The building housing the new visitor center would be smaller and more energy efficient (LEED silver standard), while providing similar visitor services. Most of the exhibits will be outside of the building, providing orientation, safety information, and history of the Little Sand Bay area year-round and after hours. In addition, a permanent display for the Twilite, a historic fishing tug associated with the Hokenson Fishery, is included within this project. Also included within this project is remediation of contaminated soils that are underneath the current building. These soils were contaminated as a result of leaky underground fuel tanks that predated the NPS ownership of the site. The tanks were previously removed and some remediation has been completed, but more still needs to be done.
