Wetlands Restoration at Baker Creek Campground

Great Basin National Park » Wetlands Restoration at Baker Creek Campground » Document List

Previous internal scoping for proposed enhancements to Baker Creek Campground has identified a wetland area that was heavily impacted by original construction of the campground prior to transfer to NPS management. The park proposes to reclaim the areas still being impacted by infrastructure and restore natural function of the wetland. The north loop of the campground would be removed along with all infrastructure and facilities, including roads, pullouts, culverts, vault toilet, water service, and campsite improvements. Impacted areas would be restored as closely as possible to pre-construction conditions. Restoration activities would include re-establishing original surface contours to allow natural drainage patterns, amending soils where necessary, seeding and plugging of native plants, and stabilizing exposed soil surfaces. The project will remove 1,215 feet of road and camping space and restore the 0.42 acre footprint area to wetland habitat. In addition, by restoring the natural hydrologic conditions, the project will have positive impact on a large portion of the existing 2.5 acre wetland within and adjacent to the loop road.
The project area was evaluated this year by an NPS wetlands scientist who determined that the project would not require a Wetlands Assessment of Effect. Loss of campsites in this loop will be offset by later addition of others in different portions of the campground.
