San José Drive Cultural Landscape Rehabilitation

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park » San José Drive Cultural Landscape Rehabilitation » Document List

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (SAAN) is currently preparing an Environmental Assessment in order to evaluate the proposed restoration of the landscape north of Mission San José and to address the current pressure on the mission's historic buildings and infrastructure that has resulted from from increased visitor participation in park and partner sponsored public programs.

As part of the establishment of the alternative public gathering space, SAAN proposes to restore the landscape between San José Drive and the north end of Mission San José. Potentail actions include the removal of a portion of San José Drive between the new Mission Library being constructed at the Mission Drive property and Mission San José. This would create an open green space connecting Mission San José and the new city library. In addition this will remove a barrier for a trail between Mission San José and the proposed Mission San José portal park being constructed along the San Antonio River in or near Mission County Park. The open space created by this restoration project will be available as a public gathering space for programs sponsored by the park and its partners, alleviating pressure these programs exert on park cultural resources and visitors alike.
