Rehab Tent Sites/Picnic Areas/Camping Facilities For Visitors

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area » Rehab Tent Sites/Picnic Areas/Camping Facilities For Visitors » Document List

This project will rehabilitate tent sites and camping facilities at Trail Creek, recreational vehicle (RV) parking, camping, and picnic sites at Barry's Landing, and primitive overflow camping for tents/trailers/RVs at Grapevine campground (north side of Afterbay Lake). Repairs will also be made to the day-use picnic facilities, grounds, and comfort station at M-K Hill Day Use Picnic Area.
Rehabilitation and repair work in these areas will consist of correcting hazardous landscape conditions, replacement of damaged picnic tables, fire rings, and BBQ grills, bear proof garbage disposal receptacles, and bear proof food storage lockers. This project will provide parking delineators, tent pads, and natural resource borders. This rehabilitation work is critical for visitor safety and resource protection.
Developed front country campgrounds and overflow sites are currently inadequate for visitor services and public health/safety, and have not received any major maintenance since they were originally constructed. Many of the upright campground grills are extremely deteriorated, and some have been removed completely due to poor condition. Picnic table wood components have deteriorated due to extremely dry climate and UV exposure. The wood surfaces are rough and splintered and frame components have deteriorated posing a safety hazard.
An increase in human/bear interactions is a problem that can lead to hazardous interactions. Current campground food storage facilities will be repaired or replaced and the installation of the food lockers will help reduce human/bear interaction and provide campers secure food storage, preventing bears and other animals from accessing human food.

This project would increase resource protection by better defining site boundaries and blocking social trail/shortcut routes, thus protecting soils and vegetation.
Erosion in the campground has created falling and tripping hazards with exposed rocks and roots. Current drainage patterns have resulted in severe rutting along roads and paths. These ruts are significant drop-offs for vehicles or bicycles and are tripping hazards for campers walking at night to the comfort stations. Some campsites are difficult to negotiate with vehicles because of this erosion. Repair and maintenance of the campground walks, trails, and campsites is critical to reduce impacts and provide protection of natural and cultural resources. Lack of trail definition and poor condition of trail tread encourages visitors to bypass established trail tread and create social trails. This leads to trail widening and widespread establishment of informal trails, destroying and damaging natural vegetation. Poorly delineated campsites and parking pads because of decaying barriers leads to encroachment on surrounding vegetation and soils. Several sites and locations in the campground are subject to continued out-of-bounds camping and shortcutting.

The interior and exterior of the MK Hill comfort station is in poor condition. The roof is leaking and fascia boards are rotted. All of the doors are original and require replacement due to age and condition. Rehabilitation or replacement of the comfort station will provide a facility that is easier to clean and disinfect, and will improve the appearance. The new comfort station will be ADA compliant.
