Ahwahnee Forensic Data Testing

Yosemite National Park » Ahwahnee Forensic Data Testing » Document List

Forensic testing of structural building components of the Ahwahnee is required to support the structural design alternatives for the Ahwahnee Comprehensive Rehabilitation Plan. A clear understanding of the material strength and assembly quality of elements that resist lateral loads, including the stone masonry will enhance the displacement-based analysis.

Summary of Work:
Concrete Wall Core Testing:
• Approximately five locations.
• Scan wall to identify any steel reinforcing in wall.
• Remove 3"‐4" diameter core from concrete wall with coring drill.
• Document as-built construction condition and provide sketch at each location.
• Test core for compressive strength, material composition and identify condition.
• Core and finishes disturbed will be patched and repaired with matching material in color, composition, and performance.

Concrete Floor Core Testing:
• Approximately three locations.
• Scan flooring to identify any steel reinforcing in floor slab.
• Remove appropriately sized diameter core into concrete floor, which will be caught from the floor below.
• Document as-built construction condition and provide sketch at each location.
• Test core for compressive strength, material composition and identify condition.
• Core and finishes disturbed will be patched and repaired with matching material in color, composition, performance.

Stone Masonry Mortar Testing:
• Approximately 20 Locations.
• Scan stone masonry and mortar to detect any wire ties.
• Remove 1" diameter core from stone mortar with a coring drill.
• Document as-built construction condition and provide a sketch at each location.
• Test core for mortar strength, compositional make-up and identify condition.
• Core and finishes disturbed will be patched and repaired with matching material in color, composition, and performance.

Gypsum Block Wall Testing:
• Quantity and locations to be determined with Delaware North Company Operations.
• Remove a 4" diameter core from gypsum block wall between guestrooms.
• Provide sketch of as-built construction condition at each location. Include wire size, spacing and pattern.
• Core and finishes disturbed will be patched and repaired with matching material in color, composition, and performance.

Visual Inspection with a Scissors Lift:
• Approximately two locations.
• Inspections will be coordinated and scheduled to minimize impacts to hotel operations.

Forensic testing will be closely coordinated with the park Historic Preservation Officer and Historic Architect. Testing will be coordinated with the concessioner to reduce impacts on guests and operations.
