Ahwahnee Correct Roof Design and Drainage Defeciencies

Yosemite National Park » Ahwahnee Correct Roof Design and Drainage Defeciencies » Document List

Two areas of the Ahwahnee slate roof are deficient and located on the roof of the Ahwahnee kitchen, a lower level roof that slopes both west and east from the gable. Roof section #1 - Back Dock; the eastern slope of the kitchen roof that is viewed from the back dock area of the Ahwahnee. Roof Section #2 - Western Façade; the western slope of the kitchen roof that is slightly more visible to the general public. Both sections sustain heavy snow loads that shed from the upper dining room roof above. The slate of the lower kitchen roof has broken in these areas. Additionally, the snow accumulation on the lower kitchen roof causes a "water dam" and snow melt run-off pools against the roof seam and leaks into the Ahwahnee kitchen and dining room.
