Emergency Stabilization/Erosion Control on Riverbank of Cane River, Oakland Plantation

Cane River Creole National Historical Park proposes to correct the eroding lakefront shore/bank of the Cane River Lake at the Oakland Plantation unit of the park.

This project entails conducting an assessment to develop treatment recommendations for immediate implementation to stabilize/rehab the lakefront shore/bank. In October 2006, 17" of rain fell within a 48-hour period in this region of Louisiana and Texas resulting in flash flooding, multiple road closures, and business closures including the national park. The storm created several serious washouts along the lakefront shore/bank within the boundary of this national park and congruently within the boundary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LDOTD) state highway rights-of-way (ROW). These washouts are so severe that they are threatening to undermine the state highway (LA494/119) in addition to the park resources.

This project proposal includes assessing the resources and the damage to the lakefront shore/bank, and developing a program study with treatment recommendations to repair the washouts and stabilize the riverbank long term.
