Integrated Pest Management Plan

Dear Interested Party:
In accordance with the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, the National Park Service has developed two alternatives to address Integrated Pest Management within Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. There are a number of invertebrate pest species, and some larger vertebrate species that pose risks to human health and safety and resource protection within the monument.
The Preferred Alternative would implement an Integrated Pest Management Plan. This plan would incorporate an effective combination of treatments in an effort to reduce pest populations, with the primary emphasis focusing on preventative measures. Should pest species pose risks to human health and safety or the preservation of archeological resources, these treatment methods would be implemented to eliminate or reduce the pest populations to safe and manageable levels. Some of these methods would include: mechanical (e.g. mouse traps), biological (e.g. raptor flights), chemical (e.g. pesticides), and cultural (e.g. sanitation practices) treatments. Treatments will be specific to the biological characteristics of the pest species and will be based on the best research and science available.
A final draft Environmental Assessment entitled: Integrated Pest Management Environmental Assessment has been prepared in compliance with (NEPA) to provide the decision-making framework that 1) analyzes a reasonable range of alternatives to meet project objectives, 2) evaluates issues and impacts to park resources and values, and 3) identifies mitigation measures to lessen the degree or extent of these impacts.
The park encourages public participation throughout the planning process. We are currently in the public review phase wherein public comments are solicited on the final draft Environmental Assessment. The park invites the public to submit written suggestions, comments, and concerns regarding the proposed project online at the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website at: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/cagr.
