Culvert #182 Preservation

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » Culvert #182 Preservation » Document List

The National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, plans to provide preservation to historic Culvert #182, located at Hancock, MD. This stone culvert is the biggest historic culvert built by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. It is 40 feet in diameter and carries the Little Tonoloway Creek under the historic canal prism and towpath. The canal, within the project area, is watered to its historic depth.

The preservation work will include;
• Improvement to the clay liner of the canal prism, located above the culvert. This will include addition of a PVC or EPDM membrane liner to help alleviate water percolation down from the canal to the culvert structure.
• The Little Tonoloway Creek will be diverted through the culvert via a temporary pipe to allow interior culvert work.
• Existing voids will be filled with grout and appropriate stone repairs will be made. This can include dowel repairs to broken stones, and replacement in kind of stones too deteriorated to repair.
• Mortar repairs as needed.

All work will meet the Secretary of Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archaeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.4 – Routine maintenance and repairs to cultural resources sites, structures, utilities, and grounds if the action falls under an approved Historic Structures Preservation Guide or Cyclic Maintenance Guide, or if the action would not adversely affect the cultural resource.

The project also meets the National Historic Preservation Act/Section 106 Programmatic Agreement, Streamlined Review Process #1 – Preservation Maintenance and Repair of Historic Properties.
