Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » Install Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail Wayside Exhibits » Document List

The National Park Service will install Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail signs at three additional locations within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. In additional to the signs already located at Cumberland, Maryland, and near Lock 33 of the park, signs will be installed at Hancock, Williamsport, and Great Falls. The sign at Hancock will be located at the Little Tonoloway Picnic area and boatramp. The sign at Williamsport will be located at the Cushwa Basin. The sign for Great Falls will be located at the visitor use area of the Great Falls Tavern.

The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail is an evolving network of locally managed trails, including the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath. These trails provide opportunities for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, boating, and cross-country skiing. The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail is the enterprise of many partners. The Trail commemorates the heritage of the Potomac and upper Ohio River basins.

The signs will meet NPS sign standards for graphics and display. They will provide information on the Potomac Heritage Scenic Trail, of which includes the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Park.

The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. A memo to the file has been issued.
