Sailors Haven Marina Entrance Dredge

Fire Island National Seashore » Sailors Haven Marina Entrance Dredge » Document List

Dear Park Constituent,

In an effort to relieve an immediate safety and navigational hazard related to the build up of sand and sediment in the Sailors Haven Marina channel, the NPS is proposing a project to dredge approximately up to 2,000 cubic yards of material from the channel attaining a new channel depth of six feet at low tide. The affected area is approximately 250 feet long and 120 feet wide.

Completion and implementation of this project requires the National Park Service to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act, which calls for the preparation of an Environmental Assessment (EA) that analyzes several alternatives to accomplish the goal of alleviating the shallow water impairment to the passage of boats and passenger ferry.

The NPS has The Environmentally Preferred Alternative as the alternative that will promote the national environmental policy expressed in NEPA and meets the primary objective of removing the materials that are silting in the entrance to the Marina. Routine Channel Dredging Over Multiple Years has been selected as the Environmentally Preferred Alternative.

Comments on this environmental assessment should be received by December 10, 2007 and sent to: Michael Reynolds, Superintendent, Fire Island National Seashore, 120 Laurel Street, Patchogue, New York 11772-3596. This will ensure their consideration is included in a synopsis of public involvement.

Thank you for your help in getting the information to the public. For any questions, please call the park's Chief of Resources Management, Michael Bilecki at 631-687-4760.

Sincerely,

Michael Reynolds
