Preservation for Lockhouse 6, 16, and 21
The National Park Service will undertake preservation repair work at historic Lockhouses 6, 16, and 21 (Swain's). The work will involve the reroofing the structures, interior clean-up of debris, vegetation trimming, and window sill repairs.
The work for the Lockhouse 6 was approved in 2003, but the work was not undertaken at that time. The work for the lockhouses at locks 16 and 21 will follow similar work outlined under the Save America's Treasures, which was reviewed and approved in 2004. All work is directed by guidelines within the "Secretary of Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties."
The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. A memo to the file has been issued, reflecting the previous compliance reviews that were undertaken.
