Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » Chain Bridge Repair and Repainting » Document List

The Government of the District of Columbia's Department of Transportation(DDOT), will undertake maintenance work on Chain Bridge. Projected work will include cleaning and repainting metal bridge components, masonry repairs, steel repairs, and drainage repairs.

The National Park Service (NPS) has reviewed the project for potential impacts to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and the Clara Barton Parkway. The NPS and DDOT will identify project tasks that could affect park visitors and/or resources.

The NPS's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archaeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.3 – Routine maintenance and repairs to non-historic structures, facilities, utilities, grounds, and trails.

The NPS will issue a special use permit to govern activities on and over park lands.

DDOT anticipates the repairs to begin in Spring 2008. A temporary pedestrian bypass trail will be established for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal to allow safe travel by park visitors during project work.
