Carderock Access Pathway to Billy Goat Trail Section C

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » Carderock Access Pathway to Billy Goat Trail Section C » Document List

The Student Conservation Corps will create a formal pathway to connect the east parking lot at Carderock to the Billy Goat Trail Section C. This project will address the social trail that has formed and will provide visitors with a clear pathway to the Billy Goat Trail. The work will involve the placement of timbers, steps and appropriate trail dressing materials along the connecting path. An existing slope will be addressed to provide appropriate step distances, will correct drainage slopes, and provide for appropriate trail dressing material. All work will be under the supervision of the park's trail coordinator and will be in concert with standard trail maintenance guidelines. Little to no below grade work will be done. All work will be within the existing footprint of the social trail. The work will repair impacted areas where the social trail has broadened. This work will be completed by Fall 2006.

The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.3 – Routine maintenance and repairs to non-historic structures, facilities, utilities, grounds, and trails.
