Fitzwater Truss Bridge / Waste Weir Bridge Replacement
Cuyahoga Valley National Park » Fitzwater Truss Bridge / Waste Weir Bridge Replacement » Document List
The Fitzwater Truss Bridge and Waste Weir Bridge are both structurally deficient. Both bridges present potential safety concerns to Park visitors and employees. Alternatives being considered for the Waste Weir Bridge and Fitzwater Truss Bridge include rehabilitating the Fitzwater Truss Bridge and replacing the Waste Weir Bridge, replacing both bridges on the existing alignment, and replacing both bridges on a new alignment.
Visitors do not have direct access to the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. In order to access the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, visitors must part and walk from Canal Road. Alternatives being considered for the trailhead and parking area for the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail include the construction of a public trailhead with a paved surface to be located on the west end of the Fitzwater Truss Bridge.
An environmental assessment (EA) has been completed to analyze the alternatives and assess the impacts of this project.
The NPS and FHWA have selected the preferred alternative (Alternative D, Option 1). A Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) was signed on August 29, 2008.
