2026 - Interim Repairs to Cushwa Basin Wall

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » 2026 - Interim Repairs to Cushwa Basin Wall

The park proposes to rehabilitate and repair a small portion of the brick wall within the Cushwa Basin. The northeast corner of the basin is currently experiencing degradation, with some bricks having fallen into the waters of the basin. This portion of wall was restored in the 1990s and again in 2006. NPS will again undertake interim repairs to prevent the collapse of the wall while the park considers permanent repairs for the future. This work will require the basin to be temporarily drained or lowered. Interim repairs will be largely underwater during normal canal operations.

Work is anticipated to coincide with typical water lowering period in fall of 2026.
