Honouliuli General Management Plan

The National Park Service is starting work on a general management plan for Honouliuli National Historic Site. The plan will provide overarching management guidance for the newly designated park unit and will address the statutory requirements for general management planning. The plan is also grounded in its enabling laws and Foundation Document: https://www.nps.gov/hono/learn/management/lawsandpolicies.htm.

As a newly designated park unit, Honouliuli National Historic Site needs to address visitor access, circulation, interpretation and education, resource management, site operations, and safety. These issues were identified through previous planning efforts and partner and community engagement. The development of a general management plan will provide strategies to address these opportunities and challenges while honoring the site's profound historical significance, which tells the history of incarceration, martial law, and the experience of prisoners of war in Hawai'i during World War II.

This planning process is rooted in public and partner engagement. The interdisciplinary planning team—comprising staff from Honouliuli National Historic Site, Manzanar National Historic Site, the Pacific West Regional Office, and the Denver Service Center—will lead the plan's development as we work together with communities and partners.

This site will be updated over the course of the planning process.
