The National Park Service (NPS) released a draft Wetland Statement of Findings for proposed viewshed maintenance along a section of shoreline of Florida Bay in Everglades National Park. The proposed project would improve and maintain the visitor views between Florida Bay and both the Guy Bradley Trail and the recently constructed Flamingo lodge and Restaurant. Enhancing the viewshed from these structures would provide visitors an opportunity to view Florida Bay from the land. The public is invited to review the draft and provide feedback through Feb. 8.
Improving and routinely maintaining the viewshed of this section of Florida Bay involves a combination of window trimming and undercutting approximately 1 acre of mangroves and trimming approximately 1.25 acres of succulent salt marsh vegetation. These proposed actions require the NPS to draft and provide a Wetland Statement of Findings (WSOF) for public review and comment. The draft WSOF describes the proposed actions; provides the methods and results of the wetland delineation, classification, and functional assessment; and summarizes alternatives considered, impacts from implementing the proposed actions, and wetland mitigation and compensation measures.
The views of Florida Bay from this area were routinely maintained by the NPS when the previous Flamingo lodge was in operation from 1958 until 2005. The lodge was then closed due to substantial damage caused by hurricanes and demolished in 2009. The new restaurant and lodge were completed and opened in 2024.
The public may comment on the draft WSOF during the review period of Jan. 7 to Feb. 8. The preferred method of providing comments is through this website using the 'Open for Comment' tab.
