Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument » Tassi-Gold Butte HMA Wild Burro Gather » Document List

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and National Park Service (NPS) are announcing a preliminary joint Environmental Assessment (EA) for proposed wild burro gathers within and outside the Tassi-Gold Butte Herd Management Area (HMA) on the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. The proposed gather operations would be a collaborative effort by the BLM and NPS.

The public is welcome to review the proposal and provide comments. The comment period will close September 9, 2024. References used in the environmental analysis are available to the public at the visitor center of the Arizona Strip District Office.

The Tassi-Gold Butte HMA, in northwest Arizona, is located 60 miles southwest of St. George, Utah and approximately 35 miles southeast of Mesquite, Nevada. The HMA covers 101, 816 acres of remote and rugged Mojave Desert in Mohave County. The Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the Tassi-Gold Butte HMA is set at zero wild burros to protect critical desert tortoise habitat.

Burros were brought to the region by the mining industry in the late 19th century. When a mine closed, burros were frequently set free. Because their natural attributes allowed them to survive in desert environments they flourished and increased in number.

Monument managers are charged with protecting public lands and the objects therein from impairment. The EA process was initiated with the intent to remove all wild burros from the gather area.
