Changes to Campground Rates

Mojave National Preserve » Changes to Campground Rates » Document List

Mojave National Preserve (MOJA) has found the need to increase the prices of its developed campgrounds: Hole-in-the-Wall Campground (~35 campsites of varying sizes), Mid Hills Campground (~26 campsites of varying sizes), Group Campground (a large site for up to 50 campers), and Equestrian Campground (a large site for up to 50 campers).

MOJA's campsites typically have minimal or no water service, trash receptables, pit toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. The Group Campground has a sheltered area with picnic tables. The Equestrian Campground can accommodate a limited number of horses in metal enclosures.

MOJA also aims to move its campground reservation system to www.recreation.gov.

Campground fees haven't changed since 2011.

The standing rates and proposed rates at campgrounds are: $12 per night to $25 per night at Hole-in-the-Wall Campground; $12 per night to $20 per night at Mid Hills Campground; and $20 per night to $35 per night at the Group Campground and Equestrian Campground.

Interagency Access Pass holders and Interagency Senior Pass holders will continue receive a 50% discount on individual camp sites at Hole-in-the-Wall Campground and Mid Hills Campground. Pass holders won't receive the discount at the Group Campground and at the Equestrian Campground.

Increases in fees will allow the preserve to invest in areas that will improve visitor experiences. The possible improvements include correcting accessibility deficiencies, replacing deteriorated picnic tables, and controlling dust at the campgrounds. Additional revenue will help fund facility maintenance, future campground improvement projects, and increased costs associated with campground operations. At least 80% of fees that the park charges for camping provide direct visitor services. A portion of fees charged through www.recreation.gov will go to a contractor that operates the reservation system.

The proposed fee increases are based on studies conducted at local private and public facilities. After research of local rates and services outside MOJA, the proposed rate increases were found comparable with existing market rates in the surrounding areas for similar services and facilities.

Public engagement is an essential part of the increase of campground fees, and MOJA seeks public input about proposed changes. The preserve accepts public comments between July 8 and August 7. Comments may come via the National Park Service's Planning, Environmental, and Public Comment public website at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/moja_campground_fee. MOJA will also welcome questions and comments via mail and email. The preserve's mailing address is:

The preserve's email address for comments is moja_campgrounds@nps.gov.

After public engagement, the new fee rates will be implemented as soon as January 2025. Publication of the new rates will appear on www.recreation.gov and on nps.gov/moja.
