Navajo Hill Water Tank Construction

The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing to construct a second water tank adjacent to the existing water tank at Navajo Hill in 2026. The NPS is seeking public feedback on this project proposal.

The current 2-million-gallon tank needs repairs, and in order to take it offline for those repairs and maintain water service, a new, smaller capacity (250,000 gallon) tank would need to be constructed. These necessary improvements would enhance the employee and visitor experience, provide increased safety and resource protection, and support park operations.

The Navajo Hill water storage tank provides critical potable water for visitor and employee consumption, visitor services, and commercial visitor services. This system also provides potable water for firefighting, and other water uses located at the housing areas, maintenance facilities, and wastewater systems. The construction of the additional water tank would not create increased demand for water, but it would allow more efficient storage of water by minimizing water losses from water waste as a result from excess storage volume. Therefore, this action would have the net effect of conserving water. The staging area for the construction of the additional water tank would be in a nearby existing paved parking area.

Having a single tank at this critical location also presents significant operational restrictions. Routine maintenance, such as re-coating and repairs, is very difficult because having the existing tank out of service for extended periods of time, even during low demand periods, is extremely challenging. Having water storage redundancy at this location would provide improved operation flexibility and protection against future system emergencies.

Thank you for your interest and participation.

Sincerely,

Kayci Cook Collins
